My name is Michael Bourke Cree descendant of Treaty 8 territory. I received my diploma and BSW from the Indigenous streams offered at Sault College and Laurentian University in Ontario. I have a background working in youth corrections, Indigenous children’s aid societies, and working in Nunavut, this has given me experience working in diverse cultures and gaining cultural knowledge.  I am a compassionate and caring person who believes in helping others discover their potential in supporting them in their journey to healing. I believe in walking with my clients to help in their healing journey and build that therapeutic relationship that supports a good healthy rapport. I like to use humor and transparency in building a foundation of a safe and comfortable environment. Working with clients is a collaborative process and can feel overwhelming and create anxiety for many, however, this approach helps the client feels safe and heard which endorses a trusting relationship.

I am registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist. I have experience working with children ages 5 and up, working with youth up to ages 12-18, and with families with various emotional and psychological concerns such as anxiety, stress, depression, interpersonal difficulties, life transitions, trauma, and grief.

I apply a client-centered approach supported by psychological tools, techniques, and interventions from several theoretical backgrounds. I incorporate a blend of strategies drawn from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Brief Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), and Harm Reduction Approach, with some DBT skills and Motivational Interviewing to tailor your needs. I value compassion, integrity, confidentiality, mindfulness, humility, respect, bravery, truth, honesty, and wisdom in work and personal life, applying these principles that help promote growth, development, and well-being for my clients.

My approach to counseling helps clients set goals, and achieve personal growth and development while working through their feelings and emotions. I understand that walking with my clients through their own healing journey provides the support, trust and safety they need in an open environment to help meet their needs.
